Bisbee is an old mining town turned hippie art community high in the mountains of Arizona, near the Mexican border. It has lots of stairs bisbee 001old miner shacks bisbee 025 and, well, art bisbee 003 Sam and Poe bisbee 029are artists that came from Petaluma.

We camped right on the edge of its open pit mine.bisbee037  Beside us was a vintage airstream followed by Billy’s monster land yacht. bisbee 008 Billy was a miner in Bisbee. So was his father and grandfather. When Billy was in high school he bought an early 40s Pontiac with suicide doors in the back, the kind that open frontways. With some money made from scrounging spent ammunition casings from the mine  he and friends bought a baby burro and kept it as a pet in the back seat. When it grew too large they took out the back seat. I never asked Billy why he had such a large motor home and what he kept in the back of it. When Billy graduated high school he sold the car and the burro and joined the navy. He served 3 tours in Vietnam on swift boats on the Mekong (If you don’t know what a swift boat is see Apocalypse Now). When he finally left the navy he headed straight for the desert and has never looked back. Here are some other land yachts we found in Bisbee:
